HOW TO CONTROL SUGAR CRAVINGS

As everyone knows sugar is not healthy and everyone are becoming conscious about consuming sugars.

Consumption of sugar has many bad effects on the body , some of them are

Obesity, diabetes, dental issues like carries, skin problems like acne , cardiac problems secondary to obesity diabetes and high blood pressure, sugar has inflammatory properties, fatty liver , it may also cause cancers.

So these are some potential risks of consuming sugars.

How to stop craving for sugary foods. We all know that sugar is also an addiction. When we eat, we crave it more and we get addicted to it without realising it.

If you are reading this blog then you have become conscious that you are eating more sugars and are craving for them. But the thing is when we realised this. Usually many realise this only after ending up with any disease or sometimes even lying on hospital bed. Of course it's really late to realise, but atleast now you have become aware of your eating habits.

Here are few tips to reduce your sugar cravings

Decrease them gradually

An easy effective way to reduce eating sugars is decreasing the intake of sugars gradually. I tried this and have worked for me. I didn't cut my sugar consumption all of a sudden. I initially stopped buying sugary foods like chocolates, cookies, soft drinks , sweets . And i stopped storing them in the refrigerator. This way i will not have something sweet to binge on when i want to eat something. I replaced them with roasted nuts , herbal teas. I also replaced artificial sweeteners with natural sweeteners like dates and honey initially. Then i went step ahead and cut my sugar quantity in my coffee , I decreased the amount of sugar i put in my coffee gradually and stopped adding sugar to my coffee now. Within the span of 25 days i have done this gradually. Now I don't crave for sugars anymore and i look healthier options for sugars every time i crave them. Now i have protein bars made at home with dates and i will have some dark chocolate once in a while. So looking for food that gives us the same satisfaction will make our journey much easier. Fruits will alsocompensate your sugar cravings.

So this is how i reduced my sigar cravings.

Keep your stomach full

Always keep your stomach full so that there is no space for extra food. Most of the cravings start when we are hungry, so when keep our stomach full, we won't crave for anything extra.

Note- Keeping your stomach full doesn't mean you should eat heavily.

When you feel hungry keep some fruits or nuts handy so that you will not have urge to order something.

Challenge yourself

Challenge yourself that you will not have sugary foods for a week or a month , in case you had some sweet in that certain period then try punishing yourself by extending the time period for one week or one month long for everytime you break the rule. Trust me this worked for me with coffee. I challenged myself for 3 months initially then i punished myself with extension of the challenge period for a month ,every single time i lost control and i had coffee. This i extended it to almost eight months now. Now i don't crave for it anymore. Now i wonder myself why did i crave for it so badly. I forgot its taste , i forgot the relaxation it gave me. Now even if i see it I don't feel like drinking it. I lost my complete appetite to drink it. Initially I wondered myself will i be able to finish the challenge but now I did it. To this you have to stick to your rules so hard only then you will be able to finish this challenge otherwise you will leave your challenge midway.

Reward yourself

You don't need to abstain yourself completely from having sweets. You can always reward yourself with something you like in a liitle quantity by the end of the week or a month or every fortnight by strictly not having sugary foods the whole week or a month. This will give you that satisfaction and control over your mind.

List down

Make a list of the sugary foods you have in your pantry and sugary foods you crave for.

Next time don't purchase them when you go for grocery shopping.

By listing down the foods you crave for , you will get idea on your eating habits. So now circle the items which you can cut down easily without putting efforts. So this way you can minimise the consumption gradually and effectively.

Withdrawal symptoms

Whatever may be the substance you are addicted to , when you try to quit them you will have withdrawal symptoms due to the decrease of dopamine levels. When dopamine levels are decreased you will experience changes in your mood. So doing the things like replacing sugars with healthier options and by eliminating them gradually , you will not experience strong withdrawal symptoms as your body is learning to live without sugar gradually.

Lastly, don't restrict yourself too strictly to abstain from anything unless it is harmful to your health. Because if not now when. These are little happiness of your life so don't miss them.If you are craving for a pie have it , if you are craving for a piece of cake or ice cream have them but only once in a while and also in moderation. Portion control is most important.
