Snoring is the most common thing. One in four people snore. Well the reasons for snoring may be different. Most of the time snoring is associated with the mouth or nose related issues.
Mostly snoring is not a life threatening problem but it can be depending on the underlying cause. If it is very rare and low then it can be ignored. But if it is loud, frequent and you snore soon after sleeping then you should know the underlying cause of it and you should get it treated.
Causes
Airway obstruction
Airway obstruction is mostly in the nasal passages like nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum , stopped up nose due to mucous.
Sleeping position
Sleeping on your back will increase the tendency to snore. Sleeping with head low may also lead to snoring.
Weight
Over weight can also be a reason for snoring. Excess fat deposition around neck can lead to pressure on airways and may lead to snoring. Not just fat deposition but also any kind of tumours around neck may lead to pressure on airways.
Aging
As you age the muscles become weak and this may lead to snoring.
Allergens
When you are allergic to anything, it may lead to congestion on nasal passages and may lead to recurrent sneezing snoring etc.
Lifestyle
Lack of physical activity , having alcohol or smoking might lead to snoring.
Disturbed sleep and sacrificing sleep for your busy schedules can also be a reason for snoring.
How can you avoid snoring
Lose weight if you are obese and see the difference. Definitely you will find that your sleep quality has been improved.
Prefer sleeping on your left or right side rather than sleeping on your back.
Elevate your head with pillow,this will help the your breathing smoothly.
Engage yourself in any physical activity daily.
Reduce consumption of alcohol and smoking.
Stay away from allergens like pollens , pollutants, any type of food. Wear mask when you are out.
Use nasal sprays or any decongestants for blocked nose. You can also take steam for colds and congestion of nose.
When you have recurrent colds and loud snoring, think about nasal polyps deviated nasal septum or any nasal obstruction.
Surgical intervention might be required for polyps and all if they are severe in condition.
Practice simple breathing exercises. Breathing exercises have multiple benefits.
Snoring is not a life threatening disease but if it is severe one should not neglect it and should definitely look for the cause and get it treated.
